The Neckar

The Neckar

A few days only after returning to the Rhine, after our 1 month stay in Strasbourg, we decide to turn to the quiet River Neckar to relax.

The Rhine is way too fast, the cargo boats are huge and they don't stop or get out of our way, the speed boats get super close to us out of curiosity and when we ask them to slow down, they wave back at us, and after the last lock downriver there are manbuilt underwater stone piers to reduce the speed of the river, and the boats, that we need to make sure we keep a good distance from. The smallest mistake could turn into a tragedy and we both need to be all time on the lookout.

We thought the 'Blue Board' was only a navigation sign between other cargo boats, but we soon learn that if they want to pass on the starboard side, they do, even with us. There were moments that we could barely see wether there was a blue board being displayed to us or not, making us do a fast last minute turn. Luckily 'Milda' is easy to steer
For those who don't know, a 'Blue board' is used by inland waterways vessels when performing a special manoeuvre or passing on the starboard side. Normally vessels pass each other on the port-side, so when they display he blue sign with a flashing white light signal this shows their intention to pass each other on the starboard-side.
